་ ⠀Out of the Past⠀་ ⠀ is an alternate universe profile of the protagonist of the books :
Altered Carbon ་ ⠀Broken Angels ་ ⠀Woken Furies ་
by Richard K. Morgan, and a NETFLIX adaptation of the series under the same title,
which originally take place in or around the 26th century.

Takeshi Lev Kovacs (nicknamed Tak),
is an elite soldier turned fugitive turned mercenary turned fugitive again.
a former personnel of the Spetsnaz, Kovacs masters various fighting style and skills
which he then made use of when he joined an elite force called the Envoy Corps,
led by a woman named Quellcrist Falconer, who trained her members into becoming
an even deadlier, more dangerous weapon. Their ability is undisputed and this is
exemplified when Laurens Bancroft met him for the first time,
with Bancroft stating :
‶ ⠀There are very few of us now who saw first-hand what the Envoys could do. ⠀‶

༒

Going to jail is a consequence Kovacs has been anticipating for almost

When a powerful, rich, influential politician and ambassador for the United Nation,
Laurens Bancroft, gave him a parole and offered him a full pardon for his no end date prison
sentence and some wealth if he manage to solve a death of a family member,

the current timeline or era without changing the actual characterization.
Original or canon information regarding Takeshi Lev Kovacs can be found in here.

⠀⠀⠀Takeshi Kovacs was born in Novosibirsk, Serbia to Jakub Kovacs and an unnamed mother. He had a younger sister, Reileen Kawahara, with whom he was very close. He had a miserable childhood, stemming from his father's verbal and physical abuse, turned for the worse when his father murdered their mother. In a fit of rage, he killed his own father at the age of 12, before being arrested by Spetsnaz Assault Corps. He was given a choice to either be imprisoned or join them by a Commanding Captain named Jaeger. After being promised (falsely) that his sister would be taken care of and put in a good home, Kovacs accepted, and joined the Spetsnaz.

⠀⠀⠀Thriving in his training, Kovacs was moved into the elite special force and for the next 10 years or more, served the Spetsnaz with distinction, until, on one mission, Jaeger tasked him and his team to wipe out a Yakuza stronghold in a local warehouse. After storming the place, he was unmasked by a young woman working for the Yakuza, and, upon spotting her necklace, realized that she is Reileen, who also recognized Kovacs. Realizing that the Spetsnaz will kill her regardless of his pleas, and that Jaeger lied to him, he instantly switched sides and attacked the other personnel he had been with, slaughtering them all with Reileen while she turned on her Yakuza masters.

⠀⠀⠀Later on, in a local bar, Kovacs and Reileen discussed their options, as they were wanted fugitives, and, realizing that everything was closely monitored by the military, decided to hide in the mountains of Siberia to wait until the heat dies down. After several days in hiding, they were ambushed by the Envoy Corps, an elite force led by Quellcrist Falconer, who used the advantage of technology to sculpt and train their members into super soldiers. Cybernetics and drugs they call Boost had been used by the nation military since the fifties, but now they became compact and better-integrated with biology; creating a pack of perfect killing weapons called the Enhanced with proper training and discipline, although not in an entirely legal and innocent way. They captured his sister, and after some persuading by Quell who said that they could make use of his skills, Kovacs decided to join them along with Reileen. While he was, at first, treated with hostility and distrust by other Envoys due to his military background, he proved his worth and trained hard, gaining romantic feelings for Quell during his time with them.

⠀⠀⠀During one failed mission which include several attacks against the military, he was captured and spun into an interrogation, where he met Jaeger for the first time since his desertion. Fortunately, due to his Envoy training, Kovacs managed to persist from giving out any information about the Envoys, fully prepared to die. However, he was rescued by Quell.

⠀⠀⠀After the second attack is planned, Kovacs found Quell writing her journal alone and decided to join her. She revealed that her father was the one who invented the Boost as a mean to give advantage to the nation army during war times. However, after realizing that the Boost could be used by the rich and powerful to do bad and irresponsible things, he regretted his decision and created the Envoys to destroy the drug for good──a legacy which she continued to uphold. Kovacs decided to reveal his romantic feelings for her. Despite Quell's reluctance to react due to her duty, she reciprocated his feelings and they had an intimate encounter at the lake that night, not realizing that Reileen secretly observed them.

⠀⠀⠀Early morning the next day, as the team was still preparing to storm the military base again, they were suddenly attacked by the heavily armed Spetsnaz, who firebombed the area and launch the Rawling Virus, which tampered with their enhancement directly, causing most of the Envoys to go insane due to their augmentations being corrupted, and turned on each other while the Spetsnaz kept slaughtering them. Kovacs, being out of the blast range, survived. He fled with Reileen and Quell, and sent them to a getaway car so they could flee, while he goes off to fight the Spetsnaz to buy them time. However, the car exploded, with Quell and Reileen already in it, presumably killing them both. Kovacs, witnessing the event in horror, hid from Spetsnaz and fleed the scene──supposedly as the last infamous Envoy super soldier.

⠀⠀⠀Over the next few years, Kovacs stayed in Russia as a fugitive, being unable to leave due to his criminal status. He became a local mercenary, and eventually teamed up with another local mercenary, Sarah, and they became lovers, working together on several jobs.

⠀⠀⠀However, not long after that, Spetsnaz caught up with him and Sarah after a mission to retrieve several explosives. During the firefight, Sarah was badly injured and Kovacs got arrested by Jaeger. Because of their past and Kovacs' disrespectful attitude, Jaeger shot Sarah and framed Kovacs for the murder, adding more charge for his punishment. Kovacs then got sentenced into a prison with no end date until a man named Laurens Bancroft gave him a parole, asking him to solve a death of his family member in return of his freedom, which Kovacs declined at first, but accept later on after he had a very vivid and realistic hallucination of Quell telling him to take the deal.

⠀⠀⠀Takeshi Kovacs is a Caucasian male, with dirty blond hair and amber eyes. He has a muscular physique, a pallor skin-tone, and is 6'3" (1,91) as shown in the mugshot administered by the Federal Penitentiary Service. Kovacs' face is square and angular, with a cleft-chin and squinty-eyes. His hair is short and spiky, and although not always, he sometimes sports a five o'clock shadow.

⠀⠀⠀Kovacs has a tattoo on the inner side of his left forearm, depicting the shape of a Dragon Ouroboros──an ancient symbol represents a serpent or a dragon eating its own tail creating an infinite symbol that symbolizes the eternal cycle of things. A perfect analogy for life being recreated out of death or rebirth through death, which he got when he joined the Envoy Corps.

⠀⠀⠀No piercings nor birthmarks, but Kovacs has been known to be the brawl over brain type of person, resulting a lot of scars and deep wounds on various parts all over his body. The most noticeable ones are the one nestling just under his left eye, three bullet scars on the right side of his abdomen (one on the upper part and two on the lower, and presumably three on his back as well), and a long hypertrophic scar dragging from his right shoulder blade all the way to the midsection of his right part of the chest.

‶ I admire a man that can look over the edge without flinching. ‶
Laurens Bancroft , UN Ambassador and his employer .

Strengths
Efficient : Kovacs sees inefficiency not just as a problem in its own right, but as something that pulls time and energy away from all his future goals, an elaborate sabotage consisting of irrationality and laziness. He will root out such behavior wherever he goes.
Loyal and Reliable : Kovacs works to exemplify truthfulness and reliability, considering them as something very important. He bases his doings by trust and when he says he’ll do something, he keeps his word, making him a very responsible member of his community and organization. Even when things seem to be impossible, he can always be counted on to see it through.
Direct and Honest : Kovacs trusts facts far more than abstract ideas or opinions. Straightforward statements and information are king, and he returns the honesty (whether it’s wanted or not).
Self-Confident : Kovacs trusts his abilities, makes known his opinions and ways, and believes in his own capacities in doing things.
Strong-Willed : A strong will makes this dedication possible, and Kovacs doesn’t give up his beliefs because of simple opposition. He defends his opinions and principles relentlsessly, and must be proven clearly and conclusively wrong for his stance to budge.

‶ If only you talk to me with a little respect. She could've lived. ‶
Jaeger , the Spetsnaz Commanding Captain .

Weaknesses
Stubborn and Dominant : Sometimes all his confidence and willpower can go too far, and Kovacs is too capable of digging in his heels, trying to win every single argument and pushing his point, and his alone.
Intolerant : “It’s my way or the highway” – Kovacs is notoriously unsupportive of any idea that distracts from his primary goals, and even more so of ideas based on emotional considerations. Kovacs won’t hesitate a second to make that fact clear to those around him.
Impatient : Some people need more time to think than others, an intolerable delay to him. Kovacs may misinterpret contemplation as stupidity or disinterest in his haste, a terrible mistake for a team player to make.
Arrogant : Kovacs respects quick thoughts and firm convictions, his own qualities, and looks down on those who don’t match up. This relationship is a challenge for most other people who are perhaps not timid in their own right, but will seem so beside his overbearing demeanor.
Insensitive : Kovacs can be a little bit too straightforward, and most of the time, this came out as making him too sassy and disrespectful towards other people.
Cold and Ruthless : Kovacs is incredibly insensitive in pursuing his goals, most of the time dismissing personal circumstances, sensitivities, and preferences as irrational and irrelevant.

‶ Are you stupid or just an asshole ?! ‶
Kristin Ortega , NYPD Lieutenant .

⠀⠀⠀There is not much room for error in the world of Takeshi Kovacs. He dislikes to see mistakes repeated, and have no patience with inefficiency. He may become quite harsh when his patience is tried in these respects, because he's not naturally tuned in to people's feelings, and more than likely don't believe that he should tailor his judgments in consideration for people's feelings.

⠀ ⠀ ⠀‶ ⠀ You ⠀wanted ⠀me ⠀to ⠀work ⠀for ⠀you , ⠀I'm ⠀working ⠀for ⠀you .
⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀You ⠀want ⠀my ⠀respect ? ⠀That's ⠀a ⠀little ⠀bit ⠀harder ⠀to ⠀come ⠀by . ⠀‶
⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀── Takeshi Kovacs to Laurens Bancroft,
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ altered carbon ,⠀ s1e2: fallen angel.

⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀Kovacs has difficulty seeing things from outside his own perspective and have little patience with people who do not see things the same way as him. He needs to consciously work on recognizing the value of other people's opinions, as well as the value of being sensitive towards people's feelings. In the absence of this awareness, Kovacs will be a forceful, intimidating and overbearing individual.

⠀ ⠀ ⠀‶ ⠀ Don't ⠀take ⠀this ⠀personally , ⠀but , ⠀I ⠀don't ⠀care ⠀about ⠀anyone . ⠀‶
⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀── Takeshi Kovacs to Victor Elliott,
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ altered carbon ,⠀ s1e3: in a lonely place.

⠀

⠀⠀⠀Kovacs has a tremendous amount of personal power and presence which will work for him as a force towards achieving his goals. However, this personal power is also an agent of alienation and self-aggrandizement, which he would do well to avoid. He is very forceful, decisive individuals. He makes decisions quickly, and is quick to verbalize his opinions and decisions to the rest of the world. Under some circumstances, he may become dictatorial and abrasive; intrusively giving orders and direction without a sound reason for doing so, and without consideration for the people involved.

⠀ ⠀ ⠀‶ ⠀ Did ⠀I ⠀fucking ⠀stutter ? ⠀‶
⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀── Takeshi Kovacs to Poe and Elliott,
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ altered carbon ,⠀ s1e5: force of evil.

⠀

⠀⠀⠀He appears to be a person of strict loyalty to people and organizations. Kovacs is loyal to everyone who has earned his trust, but has no qualms in breaking that loyalty if the person or organization breaks his trust. He's fiercely protective of his friends, and honor his friendship with those important to him once that relationship is established. Once he finds someone he truly loves and cares about, he will be devoted, loyal, trustworthy, dedicated and really, really committed. When it comes down to that, Kovacs will be all in, and will pretty much do anything for his loved ones.

⠀ ⠀ ⠀‶ ⠀ I ⠀don't ⠀know ⠀how ⠀to ⠀be ⠀in ⠀this ⠀world ⠀without ⠀you . ⠀‶

REILEEN KAWAHARA Reileen Kawahara is the sister of Takeshi Kovacs. Reileen was sold to the Yakuza and became one of their enforcers. During a Spetsnaz raid, Reileen met Kovacs for the first time in more than ten years. During the reunion, Spetsnaz personnel tried to kill Rei, prompting Kovacs to turn on them to protect his sister. Reileen did the same for him, turning on her Yakuza masters. Now fugitives from both factions, Rei and Kovacs fled to the wilds of Siberia, falling in with Quellcrist Falconer and her Envoys. While Kovacs became dedicated to the cause, Reileen was less enthusiastic. As far as Kovacs knows, she is dead.
QUELLCRIST FALCONER Quellcrist Falconer (nickname: Quell) is the nom-de-guerre used by Nadia Makita, who was a leader of the organization known as the Envoy Corps. She was also responsible for igniting the rebellion flame against the military, and the daughter of the creator of Boost. She captured both Kovacs and his sister after stumbling upon them in the mountains of Siberia, but ended up recruiting them to join her team with the mean of using Kovacs' knowledge and skills to support her in destroying the drugs once and for all, carrying her father's legacy. Somewhere along the way, Kovacs then revealed that he's in love with her, but seeing personal relationship as a distraction and burden, she told him that she couldn't return his feelings. She was presumably dead in a getaway car explosion alongside Reileen, yet Kovacs' feelings for her hasn't change in the past decade.
KRISTIN ORTEGA Lieutenant Kristin Ortega is a high-ranking Metropolitan Police Department officer. She was originally tasked with solving Maurice Bancroft's death, but she ruled it as a suicide over the evidence. She has a rather complicated relationship with Kovacs, treating him with such hostility when they first met because she believes that he's up to no good, knowing his crime records. She bugged and put a tracking device on him, seeing Kovacs as, how she refers him to her current partner Samir Abboud, a terrorist. However, as she learns more of Kovacs' past, she eventually grows closer to him, considering him a friend. One time, in sheer frustration and conflicting feelings, the two had sex. Her former colleague was Elias Ryker, whom she had a romantic relationship with. However, as Elias became unhinged over a certain case, their relationship became somewhat unclear.
LAURENS BANCROFT Laurens Bancroft is a powerful figure on the political stage and is the CEO of Bancroft Industries, living in Suntouch House with his wife, Miriam Bancroft, and their children. He gave Kovacs parole and offered him a full pardon for his no end date prison sentence signed by the president and Security Council of United Nations, and both presidents of the US and Russia if he manage to unfold the truth behind the death of his eldest son, Maurice. Laurens is seen to be very accommodating towards Kovacs, giving him transportation, rooms (which he declined) and directly ordered the Head Security of his household to always be ready at Kovacs' beck and call.
POE Poe is the owner of The Raven Hotel, and Kovacs becomes Poe's first guest at his hotel in the past few years. Owing to statements made to Kovacs upon his entry to The Raven Hotel (as well as statements made to others), Poe has been in the hotel business for a considerable length of time (well over thirty years). Poe exhibited how a hotelier should work. Being utmost sincere and very hospitable in doing his job, he showed this concerning nature in effect when Kovacs was attacked in his hotel by Dimi the Twin; activating his weapons program and took out the thugs. Kovacs' commands were often followed immediately. He developed deep emotions for everyone who stayed in the hotel, which was previously mentioned by Ortega and Dimi to Kovacs.
VICTOR ELLIOTT Victor Elliott (Vernon Elliot in the series) is the husband of Ava Elliott, and the father of Lizzie Elliott, serving as a medic in the US Marines before getting married. In order to find the person responsible for Maurice's death, Kovacs examines various death threats sent to the Bancrofts, and finds Victor using the serial number on his service rifle. After a lengthy fight and discovering that Victor has a deep-seated hatred for Laurens Bancroft and politician in general, holding them responsible for imprisoning his wife and driving his daughter to madness, Kovacs convinced Victor that he is not an enemy and offered to help the Elliotts in exchange for Victor's assistance on the Bancroft Case. Victor reluctantly agrees, but asserted that he and Kovacs are not allies. He helps Kovacs buy weapons and get in touch with contacts to help him defeat their enemies. However, following Kovacs' efforts to aid Lizzie and his role in reuniting him and his wife, Victor starts to display a high level of loyalty to Kovacs.
CURTIS Curtis is the Head Security of the Bancroft household, pledging loyalty to serve the family and with much obligation in his work. He was the one who pick Kovacs up from the prison, and was ordered to aid him on the investigation by Laurens Bancroft himself. He's seen to take the order very seriously, unlike Kovacs who most of the time prefers Victor's help rather than his. Despite the fact that he's often being brushed off by Kovacs, Curtis is always seem to be ready whenever Kovacs needs him. These days, though, Kovacs is starting to warm up towards him, involving or at least informing him of the updates regarding the case, his whereabouts, and his next moves.
ELIAS RYKER Elias Ryker is a Metropolitan Police Department officer. He has a childhood friend, Mary Lou Hency, whose dead body found in a river by locals. Sensing that there's something off with the case and having the feeling that there's something bigger to unfold, Elias, who has no clue about what happened, basically got personally affected by her death and decided to take the matter into his own hands. He often makes terrible and questionable decisions as he goes beyond the call of duty to solve the murder case, which has been frozen for almost two years now; going loco at a certain point, kidnapping people for questioning, and being framed for various murders by the enemies and criminals he'd stumbled upon along the way. Kovacs learned about him from his ex-partner Kristin Ortega and tries to find out about his whereabouts these days.
MIRIAM BANCROFT Miriam Bancroft is the well spoken, confident and elegant wife of Laurens Bancroft. They have been married for more than forty years, and have a lot of children. Despite their affectionate relationship, they have been known to have affairs, such as Miriam seducing Kovacs and Laurens having affairs with prostitutes. Sometime before Kovacs was freed, she was in the Suntouch House when Lizzie Elliot visited the house, seeking Laurens, who was away, and when Miriam greeted her, Lizzie announced that she was a prostitute from Jack It Off, a seedy brothel in which Laurens frequented. In a fit of rage, Miriam brutally beats Lizzie, causing her to miscarry her child. To prevent being prosecuted for the murder of Lizzie's child, Miriam contacts the family attorney, Oumou Prescott, who in turn, has Lizzie abducted and tortured, which causes her to lose her mind. Miriam was at the Suntouch House the first time Kovacs arrived, and is next seen visiting Kovacs' room in the Raven, where she, out of pure lust, seduced him and had sex with him.

powers & abilities

‶ ⠀⠀This is the weakness of weapons.
They're tools to kill and destroy, they're not what gives you power.
You are the weapon. You are the killer and destroyer. ⠀⠀‶
Quellcrist Falconer , Leader of the Envoy Corps.

Neurachem { Envoy Conditioning } : Neurachem is a chemical-physical augmentation to the Envoys' nervous system as an addition to the Boost, often referred to as being ‘wired’ or ‘carved’. Neurachem accelerates reflexes, extends eyesight, and increases overall speed and strength, as well as reducing sensitivity to pain, and was originally used as an exclusive enhancement for the nation soldiers back in war times. Activation can be triggered by an instinctive reaction to incoming threat or by conscious choice. Neurachem is visible on activation as a faint glow, spreading nearly instantaneously through the hairlike nerves across the human body.
Spatial Awareness { Envoy Conditioning } : The installation of Boost gives Kovacs his ability to hear or detect enemies. The process looks similar to echo location or sonar, and it allows for an Envoy to precisely locate an enemy and engage in combat more effectively.
Heightened Intuition { Envoy Conditioning } : It is thanks to this legendary Envoy ability from the Boost that Bancroft decided to lend Kovacs and employ him as a detective. At many points, Kovacs has displayed an uncanny deductive ability, able to realize people's motivations with little data.
Anticipation { Envoy Conditioning } : This enhancement allows Envoys to foresight their opponent's movement in a combat, giving them the advantage to react quickly.
Master Martial Artist : Envoys are extremely skilled and formidable martial artists and hand-to-hand combatants, excelling at improvisation and weapons handling. Originally, Kovacs was one of the best personnel in Spetsnaz. Later, as an Envoy, Kovacs received vast training from the team trainers and Quellcrist Falconer. He employs mixed martial arts that include elements of Systema, karate, boxing, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Krav Maga and Kali.
Master Marksman : Kovacs is highly proficient in handling firearms with remarkable precision, even prior to being recruited as an Envoy.
Knife Mastery : Envoys excel in knife fighting with an emphasis in Kali knife fighting. Kovacs usually resorts to his combat knife in close quarters combat.
Multilingualism : Kovacs speaks his native Russian, as well as fluent English, Japanese, Slovak and Hungarian. He speaks a little bit of German, albeit with a thick accent. It is shown that he can also understand Spanish.

important facts

Instead of living in a house, Kovacs spends his time in an old, almost abandoned hotel called The Raven Hotel, run by a man named Poe, as its only guess during his time working on the Bancroft Case.
The main residence of Bancroft household is named the Suntouch House.
Laurens Bancroft is a well-known and powerful politician both inside and outside the country. Holding the title Senate Pro Tempore in the US government and sitting in the United Nations Security Council representing the US as their Ambassador, everyone who's into politics knows who Bancroft is.
Laurens Bancroft also has a multinational industrial company that develops and manufactures advanced weapons and military technologies, famous under the name Bancroft Industries.
The Bancroft Case, or also known as The Death of Laurens Bancroft's Eldest was a pretty famous case, covered in various international media across the globe. The case follows the death of a titan of industry's eldest son, Maurice Bancroft, who was appointed to inherit his father's business and legacy. He was found slumped against the stucco wall in his father's study; head evaporated completely as the result of being blown by a beam weapon laying on his side. It is said that Maurice committed suicide, but Laurens didn't buy that; making effort to go beyond legit investigation done by the authorities and lent Kovacs to elucidate the mystery instead.
The case has been handled by several law enforcement agencies ranging from the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with all of them stating the same result of Maurice committed suicide.
Laurens Bancroft gave Kovacs a personal assistant to help him with the case, Suntouch House most trusted employee who's also the head security of Bancroft household named Curtis, whom, most of the time is being left and ignored by him.
Laurens Bancroft also gave Kovacs a Taipei Gold Koenigsegg Agera RS to help him travel. Which, also, most of the time is being left at the hotel because he prefers a more nondescript way to go from place to place.
The Bancroft case is actually just a part of an even bigger and more sinister plot, tied with the death of Mary Lou Hency──a very twisted and abnormal suicide case which currently looked into by Kristin Ortega's ex-partner and unhinged boyfriend, who's also Hency's childhood close friend, Elias Ryker.
Mary Lou Hency was actually working as a prostitute in one of the most exclusive illegal prostitution houses named Head in the Clouds, made to satisfy sexual perversions including rape, torture, and/or pleasure killing of women, men, and even children in which the sex workers are presumably young, and played into any fantasy, including mutilation of their bodies, and death. Neither Kovacs nor Ryker is aware of this fact, or even the existence of this place.

trivia

Kovacs smokes and drinks, and not entirely against drugs.
Kovacs had slept with both Miriam Bancroft and Kristin Ortega.
Kovacs' alignment is chaotic neutral.
His MBTI test showed that he's an ENTJ.
Kovacs is a pansexual and not very picky in his preference.
Kovacs isn't really fond of children.
He doesn't really think about stuffs like favorite colors. But if he does, it would be feldgrau and cedar.
His clothing preference is often seen as formal, changing between traditional black and white suit, long coats and long sleeved shirt completed with a pantalon and combat boots or dress shoes, but so very rarely casual.
Kovacs is actually an animal person, not limiting himself to take a liking towards just one species. He gets along and will get along very well with all of them, as long as they're tamable.
